Traditionally Albanians gave their children religious names, either Christian or Islamic. During Communist rule, however, the government discouraged religious names and there was a trend (actually an order) to give children secular, Illyrian names - names with Albanian meanings. At the time, many Orthodox Christians of Greek descent ended up changing their names as a requirement. Currently, English and European romance languages have been the origin of popular baby names. In fact, as of 2022, data from INSTAT (the Albanian governmental statistics agency) showed that the top 20 names are very familiar to those in America and Europe, such as Amelia and Noel. Albanian names have also been influenced by Turkish television shows that are commonly watched in Albania.
